Biographical Record
Born into a prominent scholarly dynasty of the Medina of Tunis, Mohamed Salah Ben Mrad completed his studies at Ez-Zitouna, rising to become the premier Hanafi legal authority in Tunisia. He was appointed Sheikh al-Islam in 1940 by Ahmed II Bey.
A staunch defender of traditional jurisprudence, his 1930 treatise *Al-Hidad ala Imra'at al-Haddad* initiated the famous national debate on women's legal rights, divorce reform, and the veil. Despite his traditionalism, he championed the modern education of women, educating his daughter Bchira Ben Mrad to found Tunisia's first women's union.
