Archival Overview
Legendary Amazigh musician and singer from the Middle Atlas whose four-stringed 'loutar' virtuosity and haunting bilingual poetry in Tamazight and Arabic created masterpieces like 'Inas Inas'.
Biographical Record
Mohamed Rouicha was born in the heart of the cedar forests of Khenifra in the Middle Atlas. Leaving school at age eleven to play the traditional Berber lute (loutar), he was discovered by Moroccan national radio in 1964.
Rouicha revolutionized the loutar by adding a fourth string, creating a mesmerizingly rich harmonic style. Singing with profound spiritual longing, his timeless masterpiece 'Inas Inas' (Tell Him) and 'Hbibi Jani' crossed cultural boundaries to become beloved anthems across all of North Africa.
