Archival Overview
Highly decorated military commander, Minister of the Interior, and Minister of Defense who was King Hassan II's most powerful military figure until orchestrating the 1972 aviation coup attempt.
Biographical Record
A decorated officer in the French Army who fought with the Free French forces in Italy during World War II, Mohamed Oufkir was appointed head of National Security (DGSN) and later Minister of the Interior in independent Morocco.
Feared and respected for his iron discipline, he commanded the armed forces during internal uprisings and border conflicts. In August 1972, he organized the failed attempt by Moroccan air force fighter jets to shoot down King Hassan II's royal Boeing, dying of multiple gunshot wounds hours later.
