Archival Overview
Brilliant Egyptian composer, singer, and musical entrepreneur who revolutionized modern Arabic musical theater, pioneered timeless children's classics like 'Mama Zamanha Gayya', and founded the Middle East's first vinyl record company (Misrphone).
Biographical Record
Brother of actress Huda Sultan, Fawzi composed over four hundred songs and starred in thirty-six films. His lighthearted, rhythmically vibrant arrangements departed from heavy classical structures, introducing modern orchestral breeziness to Egyptian song.
In 1958, he founded Misrphone (later nationalized as Sono Cairo), which produced records for Umm Kulthum and Abdel Wahab. He also composed Algeria's national anthem, Kassaman, at the request of the Algerian National Liberation Front.
