Archival Overview
Foremost Amazigh Rrais poet and protest singer of the 20th century whose courageous Tamazight songs defended free expression, human rights, and social justice, despite repeated state censorship.
Biographical Record
Mohamed Demsiri was born in the Demsira tribal region near Chichaoua. Mastering the loutar and ribab, he emerged in the 1960s as the most popular and politically daring voice in Amazigh music.
His songs—numbering over three hundred—addressed the plight of rural laborers, emigration, human rights abuses, and the preservation of the Amazigh language. Briefly arrested in 1981 for his socially conscious poetry, he remained an unbending voice for marginalized communities until his death in 1989.
