"Algeria above all! We must build a modern democratic state governed by law, not by privileges."

Archival Overview

Historic founder and supreme coordinator of the Revolutionary Committee of Unity and Action (CRUA) who launched the Algerian Revolution in 1954, returning from thirty years of exile in 1992 to lead the state.

Biographical Record

Mohamed Boudiaf (1919–1992), known by the nom de guerre Si Tayeb El Watani, was the visionary coordinator of the Secret Organization (OS) in eastern Algeria. In 1954, he brought together the 'Group of 22' in Clos Salembier (Algiers), organizing the historic committee that founded the FLN and launched the armed revolution.

Captured in October 1956 during the French hijacking of his plane alongside Ben Bella, he was imprisoned in France until 1962. Disapproving of authoritarian post-independence governance, he spent nearly thirty years in voluntary exile in Kenitra, Morocco. In January 1992, amidst national crisis, he returned as President of the High Council of State, waging a courageous anti-corruption crusade until his tragic assassination in Annaba.
