Biographical Record

Cheikh Mohamed Ben Guenoun was one of the greatest masters (Inshad) of Moroccan Malhun in the traditional artisan guilds of Fez. Possessing an astonishing memory and impeccable diction, he could recite and sing epic Malhun poems lasting several hours without pause.

His 78-rpm disc recordings made with early record labels such as Pathé and Baidaphon in the 1930s preserved irreplaceable poetic texts of Sidi Qaddour El Alami and Thami El Mdaghri for future generations.
