Pioneering early 20th-century Algerian writer and intellectual whose 1920 work 'Ahmed ben Mostapha, goumier' is one of the earliest French-language novels by an Algerian.
Biographical Record
Mohamed Ben Cherif was born in Djelfa into a distinguished aristocratic family of the Ouled Naïl confederation. Educated in French and Arabic, he served as a municipal magistrate (Caid) and witnessed firsthand the brutal cultural fractures between traditional pastoral life and colonial assimilation.
In 1920, he published 'Ahmed ben Mostapha, goumier', widely recognized by literary historians as one of the very first novels in French written by an indigenous Algerian author. His writings preserved the dignity, poetry, and philosophy of the nomadic high plateaus, inaugurating the lineage of modern Algerian literature.
