Biographical Record
Mohamed Ben Ali R'bati was born in Rabat and settled in Tangier in the early 20th century, where he was employed by British traveler and artist Sir John Lavery. Encouraged by Lavery to paint, R'bati developed an extraordinary, delicate watercolor style capturing the daily life, market squares, mosques, and weddings of Tangier.
In 1916, his solo exhibition at the Goupil Gallery in London was the first solo exhibition by a modern Moroccan painter in European history, securing his place as the father of modern Moroccan painting.
