Archival Overview
Sherif of Ouargla and supreme leader of the southern desert resistance, who led thousands of nomadic and oasis fighters against French expansion across the northern Sahara.
Biographical Record
Mohamed Ben Abdallah was proclaimed Sherif of Ouargla and Sultan of the Sahara in 1851 amidst popular uprisings against French colonial encroachment into the southern desert oases. Possessing magnetic religious and moral authority, he united the oasis dwellers of Ouargla, Touggourt, and the Souf with the mobile Chaamba nomad tribes.
Allied with Cheikh Bouziane of the Zaatcha revolt and Cherif Boubaghla in Kabylia, Ben Abdallah coordinated multi-regional resistance. He led daring cavalry assaults against French columns under General Randon and defended the desert passes, becoming a legendary symbol of Saharan anti-colonial defiance.
