Archival Overview
Visionary young Algerian nationalist leader who founded and directed the covert paramilitary Organisation Spéciale (OS) in 1947, training the core commanders who ignited the 1954 Algerian Revolution.
Biographical Record
Mohamed Belouizdad grew up in the popular Belcourt neighborhood of Algiers, joining the Algerian People's Party (PPA) as a youth. Following the May 1945 massacres in Sétif and Guelma, he concluded that peaceful political agitation was futile against colonial terror.
At the historic PPA congress of February 1947, the 23-year-old Belouizdad was entrusted with creating and commanding the clandestine Organisation Spéciale (OS). He recruited, trained, and armed future revolutionary legends like Ben Bella, Aït Ahmed, and Ben M'hidi. Struck down by tuberculosis in 1952, the district of Belcourt was officially renamed Belouizdad in his memory.
