Biographical Record

Modibo Keita (1915–1977) was a brilliant teacher who co-founded the Rassemblement Démocratique Africain (RDA). Upon the collapse of the Mali Federation with Senegal in August 1960, Keita proclaimed the independent Republic of Mali on September 22, 1960, pursuing socialist economic self-reliance and complete cultural decolonization.

Keita established the Malian franc, nationalized transportation and import-export monopolies, and mediated the 1963 Sand War border dispute between Algeria and Morocco alongside Emperor Haile Selassie. Overthrown in a 1968 coup led by Moussa Traoré, his funeral in 1977 sparked massive anti-junta protests across Bamako.
