Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky was a Russian composer and innovator whose stark realism, raw folkloric authenticity, and daring harmonic language made him the most radical member of 'The Five' (The Mighty Handful). Originally an imperial guardsman and civil servant, Mussorgsky dedicated himself to creating a national Russian musical identity free from Western academic conventions.
His supreme monumental opera Boris Godunov (1874) revolutionized operatic drama through its psychological depth and powerful portrayal of the Russian people as a choral protagonist. His dazzling piano suite Pictures at an Exhibition (1874) and tone poem Night on Bald Mountain exerted immense influence on Debussy, Ravel, and 20th-century music.
