Biographical Record
Mirza Fatali Akhundov was born on July 12, 1812, in Nukha (Shaki). Working as an official translator for the Russian viceroy in Tiflis, Akhundov became deeply influenced by the European Enlightenment, Russian critical realism, and Molière's drama.
Between 1850 and 1855, Akhundov wrote six brilliant satirical comedies (including The Vizier of the Lankaran Khan and Haji Gara), which inaugurated modern dramatic theater not only in Azerbaijan but across the entire Islamic East. An uncompromising secular philosopher, he wrote The Letters of Kamal-ud-Dowleh critiquing religious dogmatism and designed a Latin-based phonetic alphabet for Turkic languages.
