Biographical Record
Mirza Alakbar Tahirzadeh, writing under the pen name Sabir ('The Patient One'), was born on May 30, 1862, in Shamakhi. Struggling through grinding poverty, earning a meager living making soap, Sabir possessed an unparalleled poetic gift for satirical verse, joining Jalil Mammadguluzadeh's circle at Molla Nasreddin in 1906.
Using ingenious rhythmic couplets and popular language, Sabir exposed clerical hypocrisy, corrupt landlords, domestic violence, and educational neglect. His collected satirical poems, Hophopname, published shortly after his death from liver failure in 1911, transformed the Azerbaijani literary canon and influenced modern poets across the Islamic world.
