Biographical Record
Mir Mosharraf Hossain was born on November 13, 1847, in Lahinipara, Kushtia, to a zamindar family. Working as an estate manager and newspaper journalist for Kangal Harinath's Gram Barta Prokashika, Hossain developed a mastery of rich, classical Bengali literary prose.
Between 1885 and 1891, he published his three-volume masterpiece, Bishad Sindhu (Ocean of Sorrow), a dramatic, emotionally overwhelming narrative of the martyrdom of Imam Husayn at Karbala that became a staple in Bengali households. His 1873 play Jamidar Darpan vividly exposed the exploitation of indigo and tenant farmers by oppressive landlords. His home in Padamdi is preserved as a national memorial.
