Archival Overview
Pioneering Finnish realist playwright and early feminist champion who exposed poverty, clerical hypocrisy, and the oppression of women in Työmiehen vaimo (The Worker's Wife).
Biographical Record
Ulrika Wilhelmina Johnsson was born on March 19, 1844, in Tampere. Widowed with seven children at thirty-five, she took over her father's drapery and yarn shop in Kuopio, transforming her parlor into the leading intellectual salon in Finland, hosting writers, journalists, and social reformers.
Canth was Finland's first major female playwright. Her sensational 1885 play Työmiehen vaimo (The Worker's Wife) attacked the legal robbery of married women's earnings by alcoholic husbands, directly pressuring the Diet to enact separate property rights for wives. In Kovan onnen lapsia (Children of Hard Fortune, 1888), her frank depiction of working-class desperation led authorities to ban the play. In Finland, her birthday on March 19 is celebrated as Equal Rights Day.
