"If they kill me, I will reach my arms out of the grave and I will be stronger."

Archival Overview

Brilliant, fearless revolutionary leader of the Mirabal Sisters and co-founder of the 14th of June Movement, who studied law in defiance of Trujillo and famously declared: 'If they kill me, I will reach my arms out of the grave and I will be stronger.'

Biographical Record

María Argentina Minerva Mirabal was born on March 12, 1926, in Ojo de Agua. Possessing ferocious intellect, Minerva stood up to dictator Rafael Trujillo at a party in 1949, rejecting his advances and publicly defending political prisoners.

Graduating in law with highest honors—though Trujillo denied her a license to practice—Minerva founded the underground 14th of June Movement with her husband Manolo Tavárez Justo. Imprisoned and tortured multiple times, she was murdered alongside her sisters on November 25, 1960. Her prophetic courage made her a global symbol of female resistance against oppression.
