Founder and first Shogun of the Kamakura Shogunate, who defeated the Taira clan in the Genpei War and established warrior (bushi) feudal military rule in Japan for seven centuries.

Biographical Record

Exiled to Izu as a teenager after his father's execution, Minamoto no Yoritomo (1147–1199) rose in rebellion in 1180. Aided by his brilliant half-brother Minamoto no Yoshitsune, the Minamoto clan annihilated the rival Taira clan in the epic naval Battle of Dan-no-ura in 1185.

Instead of ruling from imperial Kyoto, Yoritomo founded his coastal military capital in Kamakura. In 1192, Emperor Go-Toba appointed him Seii Taishogun ('Barbarian-Subduing Generalissimo'), establishing the dual system where the military shogunate held actual administrative power while the Emperor remained sovereign figurehead.
