Biographical Record

Milkha Singh witnessed the massacre of his parents and siblings during the bloody Partition of India in 1947, escaping to Delhi as an orphaned refugee. Joining the Indian Army, he discovered his natural sprinting genius, training by racing against locomotives across military fields.

Singh won four Asian Games gold medals and became the first individual Commonwealth Games champion from independent India in Cardiff in 1958. In the 1960 Rome Olympics 400m final, he smashed the Olympic record in an unforgettable photo-finish race, finishing fourth by one-tenth of a second.
