Mikhail Tal learned chess at eight and developed an electrifying, hyper-aggressive style characterized by intuitive piece sacrifices that plunged games into wild, untamable complications. Opponents often felt psychologically paralyzed by his piercing gaze and bewildering combinations.

In 1960 at age twenty-three, Tal defeated Mikhail Botvinnik to become the youngest World Champion up to that time. Despite chronic kidney illness, he remained one of the most beloved figures in chess history, setting an astonishing 95-game unbeaten streak in 1973-1974.
