Biographical Record

Mikhail Larionov was a dynamic organizer and theorist of the early Russian avant-garde. After mastering Post-Impressionism, he rejected Western academic models in favor of Russian folk toys, provincial signboards, and soldier graffiti, creating the raw aesthetic known as Neo-Primitivism.

In 1913, Larionov published the 'Rayonist Manifesto', asserting that painting should capture the light rays reflecting from objects in motion, thereby arriving at total non-objective abstraction. Emigrating to Paris with his lifelong companion Natalia Goncharova, he served as a principal artistic advisor and scenographer for Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes.
