Biographical Record
Michael Dean Bossy was born in Montreal, the fifth of ten children, and set scoring records in junior hockey with the Laval National. Drafted 15th overall by the New York Islanders in 1977, he boldly promised general manager Bill Torrey he would score 50 goals as a rookie; he delivered 53, winning the Calder Memorial Trophy as Rookie of the Year.
Paired with center Bryan Trottier and Clark Gillies on the legendary "Trio Grande" line, Bossy possessed an unmatched release, scoring without needing to dust off the puck. In January 1981, he matched Maurice Richard's legendary record of 50 goals in 50 games. Bossy led the Islanders to four straight Stanley Cup titles, scored at least 50 goals in nine consecutive seasons (an NHL record), and won three Lady Byng Trophies for sportsmanship, entering the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1991.
