Miguel Angel Asturias (1899–1974) studied Mayan anthropology at the Sorbonne in Paris, translating the sacred Popol Vuh into Spanish. In 1946, he published 'El Senor Presidente', a devastating portrait of Latin American totalitarian dictatorship through hallucinated, surrealist prose.
His 1949 masterpiece 'Hombres de maiz' ('Men of Maize') fused indigenous cosmovision with resistance to capitalist land exploitation, establishing the foundational style of modern Latin American magical realism.
