Iconoclastic revolutionary poet and schoolteacher who shattered traditional Romanticism with his free-verse collection Vargjet e lira (Free Verse), depicting poverty, disease, and social anger.
Biographical Record
Millosh Gjergj Nikolla, known universally by the acronym Migjeni, was born on October 13, 1911, in Shkodër. After completing theological seminary in Bitola, he abandoned the priesthood to work as a primary schoolteacher in the impoverished mountain village of Vranjic and later in Shkodër.
Witnessing firsthand the devastating famine, tuberculosis, and societal decay of interwar Albania, Migjeni created a blistering, modern poetic language stripped of folklore illusions. His 1936 collection Vargjet e lira (Free Verse), containing iconic poems like 'Poema e mjerimit' (Poem of Misery) and 'Kanga e rinisë' (Song of Youth), was confiscated by King Zog's censors. He died of tuberculosis in an Italian sanatorium at age twenty-seven, recognized as the watershed genius of modern Albanian literature.
