Archival Overview
Extraordinary Flemish Baroque painter whose monumental masterpiece The Triumph of Bacchus demonstrated command over large-scale historical and mythological genres rarely permitted to women of her era.
Biographical Record
Originating from Mons in Hainaut, Wautier moved to Brussels with her painter brother Charles in the 1640s, working in the artistic circle around Archduke Leopold Wilhelm, Governor of the Spanish Netherlands, who acquired four of her major paintings for his imperial collection.
Unlike her female contemporaries restricted to flower still lifes, Wautier excelled across monumental history painting, detailed religious canvases, and expressive genre portraits. In The Triumph of Bacchus, she audaciously painted herself as a half-nude bacchante among pagan revelers.
