Archival Overview
Legendary Canadian multidisciplinary artist whose structural film Wavelength and iconic public sculptures Walking Woman and Flight Stop reshaped global conceptual art.
Biographical Record
Michael James Aleck Snow was one of the most influential multidisciplinary artists of the late 20th century. Working across painting, sculpture, structural film, photography, and experimental jazz piano with the CCMC, Snow continuously interrogated the nature of human perception and artistic media.
His 1967 structural film Wavelength, a continuous 45-minute slow zoom across an empty loft room, is universally regarded as a masterpiece of avant-garde cinema. In public art, Snow created the celebrated Flight Stop (the flock of Canada geese suspended in Toronto's Eaton Centre) and The Audience at Rogers Centre. He was a Companion of the Order of Canada and Chevalier of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
