Biographical Record

Educated at Hindu College in Calcutta, Michael Madhusudan Dutt (1824–1873) converted to Christianity and lived in England and France, qualifying as a barrister. In 1861, he published 'Meghnad Badh Kavya', a revolutionary heroic epic that reimagined the Ramayana through Miltonic blank verse, casting Ravana's son Meghnad as the noble, tragic protagonist.

Dutt introduced western tragic drama and Italian Petrarchan sonnets to Bengal, freeing Bengali poetry from medieval rhyming couplets and igniting the 19th-century Bengal Renaissance.
