Biographical Record
Michael Kenneth Williams grew up in the Vanderveer Projects in East Flatbush, Brooklyn. Starting his career as a professional dancer touring with Madonna and George Michael, he transitioned to acting in the late 1990s after Tupac Shakur personally handpicked him for the film Bullet based on a Polaroid showing his distinctive facial scar, which he sustained in a bar fight on his 25th birthday.
Williams attained critical immortality as Omar Little in David Simon's masterwork The Wire (2002–2008), transforming a Robin Hood-esque Baltimore stick-up man who lived openly as a gay man into one of television's greatest antiheroes. He followed with iconic roles as Chalky White in Boardwalk Empire, Freddy Knight in The Night Of, and Montrose Freeman in Lovecraft Country, earning five Primetime Emmy Award nominations and deep reverence for portraying complex, marginalized men with tender humanity.
