Archival Overview

First Labour Prime Minister of New Zealand (1935–1940), universally revered as the 'Father of the Modern Welfare State' whose 1938 Social Security Act introduced the world's first universal, free healthcare and cradle-to-grave social security system.

Biographical Record

Michael Joseph Savage (1872–1940) was born into poverty in rural Australia and worked as a goldminer and laborer before emigrating to New Zealand in 1907. Leading the Labour Party to a historic landslide victory during the Great Depression in 1935, Savage brought warmth, humility, and moral purpose to governance.

Savage nationalized the Reserve Bank, built state housing communities, restored pensions, and passed the landmark Social Security Act 1938, declaring: 'Social security is applied Christianity.' His framed portrait hung beside the crucifix in working-class Kiwi living rooms for decades; hundreds of thousands wept along the tracks as his funeral train crossed the country.
