Biographical Record
Michael David Apted was born in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, and studied history and law at Downing College, Cambridge. Joining Granada Television as a researcher in 1963, he worked on Seven Up!, which profiled fourteen British seven-year-olds from diverse social backgrounds. Apted took over directing the sequels every seven years—from 7 Plus Seven to 63 Up in 2019—creating one of the most profound and unique longitudinal social experiments in cinema history.
Apted enjoyed an equally accomplished Hollywood career, directing Sissy Spacek to an Academy Award for Best Actress in Coal Miner's Daughter (1980), helming Sigourney Weaver in Gorillas in the Mist (1988), and directing the James Bond blockbuster The World Is Not Enough (1999). He also served three terms as president of the Directors Guild of America (2003–2009).
