"I paint with my lost hand; my brush dips directly into the open wounds of our people."

Archival Overview

Towering pioneer of modern Algerian painting, graphic designer, and monumental muralist celebrated for his tragic, haunting expressionist depictions of suffering women, motherhood, and revolutionary scars.

Biographical Record

M'hamed Issiakhem (1928–1985) suffered a catastrophic tragedy at age fifteen in 1943 when an abandoned WWII grenade exploded in his hands near Relizane, killing his two young sisters and nephew and causing the amputation of his left arm. Transforming physical mutilation into ferocious artistic genius, he studied at the School of Fine Arts in Algiers and Paris.

Issiakhem forged an explosive, dark expressionist style characterized by thick palette-knife impasto, scarred textures, and haunting feminine figures wrapped in traditional haiks. A close lifelong friend of Kateb Yacine, Issiakhem designed Algeria's post-independence banknotes, coins, and revolutionary postage stamps, receiving the Lion d'Or at the 1980 Venice Biennale.
