Archival Overview
Patriotic banker and twice Prime Minister of Tunisia (1943, 1950–1952) who formed the first nationalist negotiation government demanding internal autonomy and took Tunisia's case to the UN.
Biographical Record
A pioneer of modern indigenous finance, M'hamed Chenik founded the Banque Coopérative de Tunisie in 1919 and supported the early nationalist Destour party. In 1943, Moncef Bey appointed him Grand Vizier in a defiant challenge to French colonial oversight.
In 1950, he formed the historic negotiation cabinet with the Neo-Destour to dismantle the protectorate. When negotiations broke down in 1952, Chenik sent a complaint directly to the UN Security Council, precipitating his arrest and internment in southern Tunisia.
