Archival Overview
Fourth Pharaoh of the Nineteenth Dynasty and thirteenth son of Ramesses the Great who successfully defended Egypt against a massive Libyan coalition and erected the renowned Merneptah Stele containing the earliest historical mention of Israel.
Biographical Record
Ascending the throne in his late sixties after the extraordinarily long reign of his father, Merneptah demonstrated formidable military resolve. In the fifth year of his reign, he defeated a major joint invasion of Libu, Meshwesh, and Sea Peoples in the western Delta.
His famous victory monument, the Merneptah Stele (Israel Stele), discovered by Flinders Petrie in Thebes, chronicles his triumphs in Canaan and Libya, concluding with the famous poetic inscription that peace has descended upon the lands.
