Biographical Record
Meriem Fekkaï moved from her native Biskra to Algiers in the 1920s. Immersing herself in the rich musical traditions of the capital, she established an acclaimed all-female traditional orchestra (Msamâa) that became indispensable to the grand celebrations of the Casbah and Mitidja.
Renowned for her generous spirit, infectious stage presence, and deep knowledge of popular Andalusian poetry, Fekkaï recorded dozens of discs for Pathé and Columbia, popularizing traditional women's vocal heritage across North Africa.
