Archival Overview
Heroic Theban monarch who reunified Upper and Lower Egypt after decades of chaotic civil war, ending the First Intermediate Period and inaugurating the glorious cultural renaissance of the Middle Kingdom.
Biographical Record
Ascending the throne of Thebes in Upper Egypt, Mentuhotep II launched a series of military campaigns northward against the rival Tenth Dynasty of Herakleopolis, capturing the city and reuniting the Two Lands under a centralized monarchy.
Adopting the Horus name Sematawy (He Who Unifies the Two Lands), he pacified the frontiers, reestablished royal trade with Nubia and Sinai, and constructed a revolutionary terraced mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahari that prefigured Hatshepsut's architecture.
