Biographical Record
Mekatilili wa Menza was a charismatic Giriama matriarch from coastal Kenya who rallied her community against British colonial exploitation, forced recruitment of youths into World War I labor, and crushing hut taxes. Performing the sacred Kifudu funeral dance at village councils, she inspired mass civil disobedience.
She administered traditional oaths uniting Giriama clans to boycott British labor and taxation. Arrested and deported over 1,000 kilometers to western Kenya, she miraculously escaped on foot through dense bush to resume leading the rebellion until the British met key Giriama demands.
