"My empire will reach where your imaginations cannot! A great empire requires knowledge, tolerance, and courage."

Archival Overview

Seventh Ottoman Sultan who conquered Constantinople in 1453 at age twenty-one, bringing an end to the Byzantine Empire and the Middle Ages. A Renaissance polyglot who spoke six languages and issued the Ahdname charter protecting religious freedom.

Biographical Record

Demonstrating staggering tactical ingenuity, Mehmed ordered eighty warships dragged overland across wooden greased rollers into the Golden Horn to bypass the Byzantine sea chain. Entering the captured capital on May 29, 1453, he wept at the ruined palaces of the Caesars and proclaimed himself Caesar of Rome (Qaysar-i Rum).

He guaranteed the survival and liberties of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate, transformed Constantinople into an open, multiconfessional metropolis, erected the Topkapi Palace, and codified criminal and constitutional laws.
