"Scientists are often accused of being unpractical, but without their insights no modern society can organize its future."

Archival Overview

Indian astrophysicist best known for developing the Saha ionization equation, which relates the chemical composition and temperature of stars to their spectral classes.

Biographical Record

Meghnad Saha (1893–1956) overcame severe poverty and rural origins in Bengal to formulate in 1920 the fundamental equation governing thermal ionization in stellar atmospheres. His breakthrough provided astronomers with the primary tool to interpret stellar spectra and deduce the thermal and chemical state of stars.

Beyond his astrophysical discoveries, Saha founded the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics in Kolkata and the journal Science and Culture. He was later elected to the Indian Parliament, where he vigorously advocated for river valley planning, flood control, and national industrialization.

Key Life Milestones

1920

Publication of Saha Ionization Equation

Published 'Ionization in the Solar Chromosphere', founding modern quantitative stellar astrophysics.

1950

Establishment of Saha Institute

Inaugurated the Institute of Nuclear Physics in Calcutta, housing India's first cyclotron.
