Archival Overview
Pioneering Algerian historian who authored the first comprehensive modern history of Algeria written in Arabic, reclaiming indigenous North African history from colonial narratives.
Biographical Record
Mebarek El Mili was educated at the Zitouna Mosque in Tunis before becoming a central intellectual figure of the reformist movement in Constantine and Laghouat. Recognizing that colonial historiography sought to erase Algerian antiquity and statehood, he dedicated his life to scientific historical research.
His two-volume masterpiece, Tarikh al-Jaza'ir fi al-Qadim wa al-Hadith (History of Algeria in Ancient and Modern Times), synthesized classical Arabic, Roman, and Berber sources to document the millennia-long continuity of Algerian civilization and sovereignty.
