Archival Overview
Revered British musician, Buddhist, and frontman of the groundbreaking electronic band Faithless whose spoken-word poetic delivery anchored worldwide dance anthems "Insomnia" and "God Is a DJ".
Biographical Record
Maxwell Alexander Fraser was born in Brixton, South London, to Jamaican parents. Beginning his musical career as a hip-hop DJ on pirate radio stations in London, he founded the Soul Food Café band before meeting keyboardist Sister Bliss and producer Rollo Armstrong in 1995 to form Faithless.
Faithless revolutionized electronic dance music by bringing spiritual depth, conscious lyrics, and theatrical gravitas to arena rave culture. With his deep baritone, hypnotic cadences, and Nichiren Buddhist philosophy, Maxi Jazz delivered monumental club anthems. In 1995, his nocturnal spoken-word delivery on "Insomnia" ("I can't get no sleep...") turned the track into one of the most celebrated electronic anthems of all time. He followed with iconic tracks including "God Is a DJ" (1998) and "We Come 1" (2001). Faithless sold over 15 million records worldwide, headlining Glastonbury twice and filling stadiums across the globe.
