Biographical Record
Max Pechstein joined Die Brücke in 1906 after formal training at the Dresden School of Applied Arts. Possessing great technical agility, he was the first of the group to achieve commercial and critical success, which eventually caused friction leading to his expulsion from Die Brücke in 1912.
Inspired by Gauguin, Pechstein traveled to the Palau Islands in the South Pacific in 1914, producing exotic, vibrant studies of indigenous life before World War I forced his return. Though purged from his academic post by the Nazis, he was reinstated after 1945 and celebrated as a pillar of modern German art.
