Biographical Record
Maximo Guillermo Manus was born on December 9, 1914, in Bergen. After adventurous years in South America and fighting as a volunteer in the Finnish Winter War, he returned to Norway to combat the Nazi occupation.
Trained in Scotland by the Special Operations Executive as a member of Company Linge, Manus infiltrated Oslo repeatedly. Using specialized submersible canoes and limpet mines, he and Gregers Gram blew up German troopships and repair docks, culminating in the sinking of the 9,000-ton transport ship SS Donau in January 1945. Awarded the War Cross with Two Swords and the British Military Cross, his best-selling memoirs and films immortalized the Norwegian resistance.
