Joseph Henri Maurice 'The Rocket' Richard (1921–2000) was an explosive Canadian ice hockey winger and a mythic cultural icon for French Canada. Playing 18 seasons for the Montreal Canadiens, Richard's fiery intensity and piercing glare struck terror into opposing goalies.

Richard was the first NHL player to score 50 goals in a single season (accomplished in 50 games in 1944–45) and the first to reach 500 career goals. He won eight Stanley Cups with Montreal, including five consecutive titles as team captain from 1956 to 1960.
