Archival Overview

Belgian Symbolist master who won the 1911 Nobel Prize in Literature, world-renowned for his fairy tale drama The Blue Bird (L'Oiseau bleu) and Pelléas et Mélisande (set to music by Claude Debussy).

Biographical Record

Raised in Ghent, Maeterlinck studied law before publishing his symbolist poetry collection Serres chaudes (1889) and the groundbreaking play La Princesse Maleine, which Octave Mirbeau hailed as superior to Shakespeare. In 1892, he wrote Pelléas et Mélisande, capturing the silence and mystery of destiny.

His 1908 philosophical fairy play L'Oiseau bleu premiered at Stanislavski's Moscow Art Theatre to worldwide triumph, symbolizing humanity's quest for happiness. His natural history essays, including The Life of the Bee (1901), blended science with sublime philosophical mysticism.
