Biographical Record
Maurice Laban was born in Biskra on the edge of the Sahara and spent his life immersed in Chaoui and Saharan culture, speaking fluent Arabic. A dedicated antifascist, he volunteered to fight in the International Brigades during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), defending Madrid against Franco's forces.
Returning to Algeria, he mobilized date-palm farmers and miners against colonial exploitation. In 1955, he helped establish the armed Combattants de la Libération (CDL) network, joining Henri Maillot in the maquis of the Chélif where he was killed in action on June 5, 1956.
