Biographical Record
Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani was born on December 12, 1880, in Sirajganj. Educated at the Darul Uloom Deoband seminary in India, Bhashani dedicated his seven decades of public life to organizing peasant uprisings against colonial landlords and riparian feudalism, earning the moniker 'Bhashani' after leading the Char Bhashan peasant congress in Assam.
In 1949, Bhashani was elected founding President of the East Pakistan Awami Muslim League. At the historic 1957 Kagmari Conference, he famously warned Pakistani rulers: 'Assalamu Alaikum' (bidding farewell to Pakistan). A pioneer of Afro-Asian anti-imperialist solidarity who befriended Mao Zedong and Ho Chi Minh, he led the monumental Farakka Long March in May 1976 at age ninety-five.
