Biographical Record
Matilde Hidalgo Navarro was born in Loja on September 29, 1889. Refusing to accept conservative societal bans against female education, she fought to enter high school, graduating as Ecuador's first female bachelor.
Graduating with highest honors from the Central University of Ecuador as the nation's first female doctor in 1921, she shocked the continent on June 9, 1924: demanding her legal right to register to vote in Machala. When officials hesitated, the Council of State ruled in her favor, making Ecuador the first country in Latin America to grant female suffrage.
