Affectionately known as 'Gandhi Buri' (Old Lady Gandhi), 72-year-old freedom fighter who was shot dead holding the Indian flag aloft during the Quit India Movement.

Biographical Record

Matangini Hazra was born in rural Midnapore, Bengal, and was widowed at eighteen. Deeply inspired by Mahatma Gandhi's philosophy of nonviolent satyagraha, she devoted her life to spinning khadi, organizing village women, and participating in the Salt Satyagraha.

On September 29, 1942, during the Quit India Movement, the 72-year-old Hazra led a procession of six thousand volunteers to take over the Tamluk police station. When British police opened fire, she stepped forward holding the tricolor flag aloft, continuing to chant 'Vande Mataram' as bullets struck her until she collapsed.
