Cultured King of Numidia and son of Masinissa, father of Jugurtha and Gauda, celebrated for winning the Panathenaic games in Athens and patronizing Greek philosophy and law.
Biographical Record
Mastanabal was the youngest legitimate son of King Masinissa of Numidia. Following his father's death in 148 BCE, Roman general Scipio Aemilianus divided the royal governance among Masinissa's three sons, entrusting Mastanabal with the judicial administration and legal affairs of the kingdom due to his erudition.
Highly educated in classical Greek literature, jurisprudence, and horsemanship, Mastanabal achieved renown across the Mediterranean by winning the Panathenaic four-horse chariot race in Athens, commemorating his victory with public inscriptions on the Acropolis. He died in 140 BCE, leaving the legacy that shaped his son Jugurtha.
